Major Research Interests Because of my education in aerospace engineering and materials science at Caltech and China, civil engineering and mechanical engineering faculty experience in the US, my research is typically interdisciplinary. Mainly, my research is focused on mechanics and designs of advanced materials and structures, especially multi-scale relationships between nano/micro-scale phenomena and macro-scale properties. My current interests/projects involve both extremely small time-scales and length-scales in very different research areas. 1. For example, the maximum impact force on a thick polymer system featuring a DTMI was reduced by 60%, and energy absorption was increased by 130%. We plan to conduct systematic basic research to understand the effects of the bonding strength and interface thickness on crack arrest, to explore novel layered material designs for achieving low costs. 2. Impact-resistant Composite Designs for Aircraft, Automobile and Wind Turbines A major shortcoming of wind energy technology is the failure rate of composite blades is up to 20% due to bird/bat strike as shown in Figure 2. On the other hand, one major US Energy Company pleaded guilty to killing 14 eagles and 149 other birds due to their wind turbines ($1M fine, or $6,000/bird!). Therefore, we plan to employ â€Å"damage-trap material interface (DTMI) design† to reduce not only the impact damage of composite blades, but also the bird/bat death rate, since the maximum impact force acting on birds will decrease after special thin interface layers are placed between layered composites based on our preliminary impact experiments (impact speed up to 50 m/s). With no-fault divorce, and a standard for determining custody in light of the child's best interest, judges are besieged with a backlog of disputed custody cases without clear and concrete guidelines to follow in deciding whether to favor the mother or the father. Many experts in family law - both from the legal and mental health arenas - have observed an increase in deceptive and manipulative tactics used by divorcing couples. This paper looks at Parental Alienation Syndrome, which is a complex manifestation of mental and emotional abuse resulting from conflicted parents fighting for custody. Recommendation are given for a model that could be employed by family law mediators that could decrease the number of custody cases that go to litigation, while ensuring that families suffering from Parental Alienation Syndrome receive prompt and effective intervention. Mediation in Child Custody Disputes - Historical Perspectives The surge in divorce rates during the past two decades along with major judicial reforms since the 1970's has led to several significant changes in the ways that courts handle family law cases. Divorce and custody laws have been widely revised by states, and alternatives to litigation have emerged and gained prominence. Mediation has become a popular option, and in some states, mediation is mandatory for divorcing couples. Judicial systems in California, Minnesota and Wisconsin were early experimenters with the concept of conciliation courts, where parents were encouraged to work out divorce and custody conflicts. States that have introduced mandatory mediation in cases of contested custody include Delaware, California, Maine and Florida. (Herman, 1990) There has been research that supports mediation as a positive intervention in custody disputes. Studies of custody cases in several large cities report that over half (between 50 and 90 percent) of the cases are settled through mediation. (Atkinson, 1996) A large empirical evaluation of mediation services in three court-based programs, showed generally high levels of user satisfaction according to the researchers. (Pearson only 10 percent of mediated couples returned to the courtroom after two years with problems related to custody or visitation, while 26 percent of the non-mediated couples were back in court within two years. (Herman, 1990) Herman (1990) demonstrates that there are significant challenges to the suitability of mediation in some custody disputes. He asserts that the assumption that mediation will deter the bitterness, disappointment, and anger of divorcing couples and lead them toward cooperation, understanding, and tolerance has not been documented. Even a highly skilled mediator cannot compensate for the sharp differences in sophistication and power that often exist between divorcing spouses. (Herman, 1990, p. 56) In a small study of forty divorcing couples conducted at the University of Virginia, half the couples opted for mediation, while the other half litigated without mediation. The mothers in the mediation group reported more psychological distress than did the litigating mothers. (Herman, 1990) The issue of mandatory mediation of child custody cases has received criticism. Carol Bruch, professor of Family Law at the University of California at Davis, publicly testified before the New York state legislature about her concerns that children are not best represented in mediation and women are often at a distinct disadvantage. She observes that there is no research evidence to support a claim that children whose parents mediate custody settlements do better than children of litigating parents. The Form becomes the owner of the Button, and the Panel is set to be its parent. Every Delphi component has an Owner property. The Owner takes care of freeing the owned components when it is being freed. Similar, but different, the Parent property indicates the component that contains the child component. Parent Parent refers to the component that another component is contained in, such as TForm, TGroupBox or a TPanel. If one control (parent) contains others, the contained controls are child controls of the parent. Parent determines how the component is displayed. For example, the Left and Top properties are all relative to the Parent. The Parent property can be assigned and changed during run-time. Not all components have the Parent. Code of the Street Essay

The introduction chapter first explains the different types of neighborhoods that the city of Philadelphia has and each of the risks that go along with each neighborhood. Some of the neighborhoods are predominantly white, some are racially mixed, and some are predominately black. In the white-middle class neighborhoods, the neighborhood farthest away from the core downtown area, there is little crime and upscale restaurants and stores. In the racially mixed neighborhood the blacks and whites tend to get along but the whites are still aware that blacks are around. In the black neighborhoods public decency gets little respect. The author explains a story about a women stopping her car in the middle of the street and nobody says a word or beeps a horn. This is because nobody wants to start an uproar or see the women’s wrath. â€Å"This way, the code of the street provides an element of social organization and actually lessens the probability of violence. Code of the Street The main problems in the inner-black communities, is the interpersonal violence and aggression. This aggression and violence is the result from the lack of jobs, limited public services, the stigma of race, the fallout from rampant drug use, and drug trafficking on the streets. The street culture has evolved a â€Å"code of the street†, which amounts to a set of informal rules governing interpersonal public behavior, particularly violence. In the code of the streets everything is revolved around respect. With respect, people have peace and security in public. The respect needed in a city like Philadelphia can cause people to do wrong things, but respect is needed to live in a city like Philadelphia. Chapter 1 Decent and Street Families The beginning of chapter one explains that â€Å"decent† and â€Å"street† labels is the result of a social contest among individuals and families of the neighborhood. Even though a person might be a â€Å"decent†, that person might act like a â€Å"street†. Even though a person might be a â€Å"street† that person might act like a â€Å"decent†. This action is called code switching. Decent teenagers are more often engage in code switching. This is because decent  people don’t get the same respect as â€Å"street† people on the streets of Philadelphia. This causes decent people to do the same actions of street people. Street people pride themselves on living the thug life. These people are usually highly intelligent but lack the education needed. The street people tend to embrace the street code to the max and will live and die on the street. Decent Families From what I took from that section of the chapter is that decent families from the inner cities pride themselves on being like middle class nuclear families. The decent family prides themselves on working hard and making do with what they have. The decent family saves their money for material things. The decent family instills a sense of responsibility in its younger members. Most decent families have the father still living with them. The father is usually the head of the household and sets rules for his children. He is a very strict man trying to keep his children away from the street life. Street Families The street family lives by the code of the street. These families have very little resources compared to the decent family. The lives of street-oriented families are usually disorganized. Bills are usually unpaid but instead money will be spent on drugs, cigarettes, and liquor. Street families are usually considered to be lowlifes or bad people and are seen as a bad influence on the community. The kids of street families have it the hardest. These kids usually live in homes of crack addict mothers and drug dealing fathers. The kids learn from their parents and tend to grow up to be the same things. This is an example of the social learning theory. This is a prime example because the kids are learning this from the parents and then go on to do the same things their parents are doing. It is usually a cycle until someone in the family breaks it. Chapter 2 Campaigning for Respect This chapter in my opinion is the most important chapter in the book. The code of the streets is all about respect. Everything a person does on the streets is all for respect. Without respect the person will not be able to  survive on the streets. â€Å"Respect becomes critical for staying out of harm’s way.† To get respect on the streets a person might fight for it. Much of the code has to do with achieving and holding respect. The Social Shuffle The first chapter talked about decent kids trying to act like street kids, this section of the chapter is all about that. Decent kids grow up with street kids and the street kids usually bully the decent kids. To get respect the decent kids are typically fighting for respect so they are not bullied. â€Å"As a means for survival having a â€Å"name,† a reputation for being willing and able to fight is a way to get respect among peers.† The Self-Image Based on Juice Juice is a term in the streets that refers that there are no guarantees against challenges, because there are always people around looking for a fight in order to increase their share of respect. In the streets the right look can get a person respected. Physical appearance and clothes plays an important role in respect. If a person does not have the right clothes to fit it a way to get those materialist things is by taking possessions. The School as a Staging Area In class we learned that a young age kids get labeled. This label can be carried all the way through high school. In the code of the street I learned that even though the decent kids are good kids they would act like the label that gives them respect instead of the good label that they are. In Philadelphia most kids don’t take school seriously. To accept school would give in act white, to give up the value of the street for some other thing. This shows weakness and does not give respect on the street. Chapter 3 Drugs, Violence, and Street Crime Drugs and crime go hand and hand. The more drugs on the street the more crime is being committed. The same thing goes for jobs and education. The better education a person has, the more chance of a person finding a job. Kids from the inner city are pretty much are set to fail. The inner cities usually have poor education systems resulting in kids not having the proper  education to find a decent paying job. This is forcing kids to go into the streets and dealing drugs. This results in more crime for the cities. If cities would give kids a proper education then there would be less drugs, violence, and crime. This section in my opinion is the strain theory. The social structure around the children pressures them into committing street crimes. Chapter 4 The Mating Game The sentence that stood out to me the most in this chapter was â€Å"a street-oriented young man may rationalize his marriage as a â€Å"trap† into which the women has lured him.† The fact that young girls want to get pregnant at a young age to keep their baby daddy’s around is crazy to me. In society it is hard to afford a child when the person has a well-paying job. When an inner city child has a child that kid is set up to fail. The Baby Club The section of this chapter talks about how girls have the dream of a â€Å"good life† and to have that â€Å"good life† it is necessary to have a baby. It is the â€Å"cool† thing to have a baby in the inner city, as the book says. The girls have social clubs and peer groups that give social support for having a baby at a young age. In the inner city it was an accessory to have a baby and to have the coolest accessory, there was a need to get the baby decked out in the coolest/hippest clothes. This is an example of ration choice theory. Even though rational choice was not to have a child, the lack of emotion for the father and child caused the person to have a kid. Chapter 5 The Decent Daddy The Decent Daddy is someone that is respected in the neighborhood and in the household. This person is a true man. He respects his wife and provides for his kids. The wellbeing for his family is his main priority. In the inner city of Philadelphia there are not many of these people. In the inner city it is all about the game and money, and less about the family. This chapter showed many examples of decent men in the inner city and all the men cared about their family more than the street life. I believe if there were more men like this in the inner city this would be a positive example of a social learning theory. Chapter 7 John Turner’s Story The whole entire time I was reading John Turner’s story I was thinking â€Å"is the author trying to make us feel bad for this guy.† I did not feel bad at all for John Turner because if he didn’t bring that gun to solve a dispute he wouldn’t be in this situation. He got himself in this situation. From what the author said, John Turner was a big guy and more than likely could have defended himself without the need of a gun. John had many struggles after his day in court. He had a job, went to jail, started dealing drugs, found another job, and then lost the job. John wanted a life that was socially acceptable but his life in the streets altered those views. In class we learned about culture. It is the set of norms and values passed down from generation to generation in society. The code of the street is like cancer. It the code is in their genes and gets passed down from generation to generation. Conclusion: The Conversion of a Role Model Robert was very respected on the streets for his gang like mentality but got locked up in jail. In jail he learned that the hustle in the streets is not a good way of life. When he got out of jail, Robert started his own hotdog stand business. People on the streets recongnized that he was doing well in his life without committing criminal acts. The code of the streets is still in Roberts mind but he does not have to live by the code of the streets. My Honest opinion of the Book I feel like this book repeated itself way too much. I am a criminal justice major and have taken a gangs class and a lot of what I learned about in that class was in this book. The author could have saved 300 pages of paper by just writing the last sentence of the conclusion. â€Å"Unless serious efforts are made to address this problem and the cycle is broke, attitudes on both sides will become increasingly hardened, and alienation and violence, which claim victims black and white, poor and affluent, will likely worsen.†

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets shows Harry further mature as a wizard and as a person. Though he is still young, Harry learns many important lessons in this novel that help him learn about life and himself. By the end of the novel, readers can see Harry as a bit more developed, but not as a completely different person. The second novel in the Harry Porter series isnt too different from the first in that it enforces many of the characteristics readers have already learned about Harry from the first novel. For example, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone readers learn that Harrys deepest desire is to be with family. In the very beginning of the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets readers learn that he cant wait to go back to Hogwarts and see his friends, who are his new family. Readers also see in the second novel that Harry has many doubts in himself, he still lacks confidence; likely caused by years of abuse by the Dursleys. Readers can also see that Harry is still kind, witty, honest and brave person. These can be seen when Harry treats Dobby as an equal in a kind manner, when Dobby asks him about his friends not writing and he immediately questions Dobby about how he knows that, when he refuses to lie to Dobby in order to get him to put down the cake, and finally when he uses the floo pow der without much hesitation. Readers also see that Harry is just as righteous in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as he was in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. This can be seen in his distaste of people like Lucius and Draco. Another characteristic which Rowling builds on is how Harry deals with fame. In the first book readers see Harry discover that he is famous for the first time, however his new found fame doesnt really seem to impact him. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets readers see that Harry actually dislikes his fame. Harry seems to be the exact opposite of Lockhart. Though, Lockhart is oblivious to this and ends up offending Harry by assuming that he seeks fame the same way he does. Rowling clearly shows readers how Harry feels about his fame when tries to refuse to take a picture with Lockhart and even more so when his image in the picture refuses to stay in the image; leaving Lockhart to pose alone. Two major themes Rowling writes about in the novel are class and prejudice. From the very beginning of the novel readers can see that Harry treats all beings equal; seen when Dobby shows up. However, readers can also see how young and naÃÆ' ¯ve Harry is in this novel. For example, when Draco calls Hermione and a filthy little mudblood Harry has no idea what that means (112). Through this readers can see how innocent Harry actually is. He doesnt know how evil the world can be and this is something he learns during his time at Hogwarts. In addition, Harry lies to Dumbledore about what he knows and then turns to Riddle for help with figuring out what is happening. This shows how young Harry is and that his judgment still needs more developing. Eventually readers can see Harry gaining better judgment with regards to who he should trust. The voice that Harry hears also helps readers identify some of his characteristics. When Harry hears the voice say that it is time to kill (Rowling 137), his instinct is to follow the voice in hopes of preventing it from doing anyone any harm. This is a characteristic that Rowling continues to build upon with Harry. His instinct is to always do good things and prevent evil from occurring; however Harry does not understand the source or nature of the voice. This lack of understanding becomes the source of frustration and doubt for Harry. He later deals with this by confiding in his friends, but rejects help from a more mature and experienced people, such as Dumbledore. The fact that he seeks help from his friends shows some maturity in Harry, but because he doesnt seek help from Dumbledore readers can see that he has some growing up to do. Throughout the book Rowling enforces many of the characteristics she has already given Harry. For example, Harry doesnt look down on Filch for being a squib, he throws a firecracker into a cauldron while in potions class, so that Hermione may get the ingredients for the poly juice potion, and finally his performance during the Quidditch game versus Slytherins. These show that Harry treats all beings equal, that hell break the rules for the greater good, and the Quidditch match shows his bravery, loyalty, determination, and teamwork. The Quidditch match a very example for describing Harry because of how intense it is. Oliver tells Harry, get to that snitchà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦or die trying and that is exactly what Harry does (167). Even though so many horrible things are going on around him, he doesnt explode or over react. In fact, when Ernie apologizes for suspecting him, Harry does not hold a grudge. Hermiones character actually players a major role in the development of Harry. Her condition leaves her confined to the infirmary and leaves Harry to solve problems hed leave to Hermione on his own. Without Hermiones knowledge, Harry must approach every dangerous encounter while relying on his own instincts, bravery, and loyalty. In this final conflict, Harry shows immense bravery and loyalty. He also learns an important lesson with regards to his good nature and trusting other people. In the end readers are presented with a character that is different, but not completely. Readers can see that Harry is not an exceptional hero. In fact he is more of an average person that is aided by those who care for him and are genuinely concerned for his well being. Harry is a good person and this would be true even if he wasnt a wizard. While magic adds to the novel, it does not entirely make up Harrys personality. In fact, it is Harrys human characteristics that allow Harry to shine as a hero in this novel. He is a hero, but this fact is not based solely on him being a wizard. In conclusion, Harrys development teaches readers many things and gives them some insight of what is to become of Harry. One theme of the novel is that people will always encounter obstacles. Harry learns that even as a wizard, he will always face difficult times. To overcome his endeavors Harry must continue to grow as a person and continue to live fully aware that dangers are present.
